Maple Holistics Silk18 Natural Hair Conditioner Review

Hi Sparkers!

Long time no chat.  I apologize for the absence but life got very busy this year.  Between the wedding, extra responsibilities with my day job, and the peaks and valleys of 2017, this year has been quite the journey for Mrs. Sparkles.  I was motivated to get back into the swing of things by an amazing opportunity provided to me by the company Maple Holistics!  They were kind enough to send me their Silk 18 Natural Hair Conditioner* in exchange for my review.  As usual, I'm always upfront with all of you when I get these types of opportunities and I am allowed to express my true opinion of this product!  The Maple Holistics representative I worked with was kind and professional.  They really stand behind their product and are a wonderful company as you will see if you continue to read this post. 

Nutshell Review:  I love this product and this company.  I will repurchase this conditioner and try other products.

 






There are a lot of reasons why I'm a new superfan of this product and I look forward to trying many more.  Let just start with the obvious: it works! 

Performance
I was initially skeptical because the formula felt thin and more watery than my go-to all natural conditioner Shea Moisture: Superfruit Complex 10-In 1 Renewal System Hair Masque.  I was worried that it would not be moisturizing or leave my hair in better condition--it is beached platinum from naturally black, so I need all the help I can get.  But never to fear, after waiting about 10 minutes with this in my hair during my latest "destress from life bath," my hair was silkier than it has been in ages.  Per Maple Holistics's website:

"Silk 18 gets its name from the 18 Silk Amino Acids found in its formula. No matter your hair type, our blend of essential oils and silk amino acids will smooth and soften your locks to shiny perfection. The natural vanilla scent of Silk18 is delicious and calming. Our products are free of sulfate and other harmful ingredients and Silk18 is no exception!"

Another benefit to this conditioner over my go-to, is that it really would work for all hair types.  If you have extremely fine hair, Shea Moisture products tend to be very heavy.  I'd say that even the finest hair would end up silky AF using this stuff.   

There are no directions on the bottle but I shampooed with my favorite shampoo then left this in my hair for about 10 minutes in the bath.  I would work the same if you put it in while showering, then washed your body and maybe shaved.  I do think it is light enough to also use as a daily conditioner if you like to rock a sleek and smooth look most of the time.

Ingredients:
You cannot beat simplicity of ingredients here for your health and the environment.  This is labeled non-toxic so I'd say this is safe to use for kids as well.  If kids can eat crayons, they can definitely accidentally swallow a bit of this without issue.

Water, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Argan Oil, Shea Butter, Certified Organic Pomegranate, Hibiscus, Green Tea and Sea Buckthorn, Silk Amino Acids, Jojoba Oil, Natural Vanilla Fragrance

Price:
You would expect a premium ingredient product like this to be the list price of $30, but on their website, it is only $9 for 8oz!  I know this isn't a ton of product but I also know I used way too much initially.  I thought that because it was more watery than I am used to that I needed to keep adding more.  That isn't true.  I think about one tablespoon (or two if you have extremely long/thick hair) is more than sufficient.  This product is a great price for the quality and results.  If you are still on the fence, Maple Holistics will send you a free sample so you can try their stuff for yourself!  They have 16 products for you to choose from so you can pick the sample that is the most applicable to your needs.

Platinum Blonde At Last! New Updated Hair Care Routine Post

Sorry to be gone so long everyone!

I see from our Facebook Page that we have a lot of new Sparklers out there!  A warm welcome to all and I do apologize for neglecting things.  Life has been crazy with wedding planning and life in general.  But I am back!  It has been requested that I do a post on my updated hair care routine since the last time I posted about my last hair lightening experience was all the way back in 2014!  If you follow me on Instagram you will probably have seen that I have finally made it to platinum!

As you can see in the picture below, I have a new amazing hair guru--her name is Iva and works in the Bay Area in Northern California.  Send me an email if you are serious about going to see her!  Hopefully I will have more internet details for you to get a hold of her soon.  I will provide that information as soon as possible. She uses advanced lightening techniques that use no heat and bond rebuilding products that mean I got this light in just 2 applications (in one sitting) with NO damage.  It is truly incredible work!  Mini Tip: If you want to go platinum quickly, make sure you have a stylist that uses Olaplex or B3 Bond Builder, these are the best bond repairing formulas on the market!  There is no reason why you should not be getting this hair-saving product in your color other than the stylist doesn't want to keep up with the most current technologies that are best for your hair.  Going platinum is tricky business and you want the best if you are going this light!  Also, I do not suggest going platinum yourself.  It is too hard to prevent overlapping of the bleach when you DIY this, which causes bands of damage that will cause major problems and breakage in the long run!  I had Iva used a balayage techniques to apply the bleach and  put a ash brown shadow root on my blonde hair because it think it makes it look more pretty and natural.  If you want a similar look, ask for that!

Wash and Condition:
This is pretty much the same as my last post, I only wash my hair fully about 2-3 times a week. I've found that dry shampoo really seems to irritate my scalp these days so I'm washing a bit more often (or embracing braids and other styles that look good with oiler hair).  Side note, I do SHOWER every day still, I just don't worry about washing my hair every day--shower caps are my BFF.   I've gotten super sweaty at the gym but I'm not supposed to wash my hair, I still conditioner wash my hair (see my conditioner washing post).  The products I use have changed significantly with my new platinum look.

• Joico: Color Endure Violet Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner- My NEW go-to shampoo and conditioner duo.  I use it pretty much every time I wash my hair now.  I try to leave the shampoo in for at least 2-3 minutes and the conditioner in 3-4.  I love how moisturizing both products are and it really is formulated perfectly and gently for us bottle blondes.  I do still shampoo twice, but the first time I only use a tiny bit of shampoo.  I fully lather and wait on the second wash.  I condition once.
• Paul Mitchell: Tea Tree Special Shampoo and Conditioner-  Still use this once a week to clarify my hair of silicones and product build up.  It also really helps treat any scalp issues I may be having with dandruff or itchy-ness.  I also still use the conditioner to co-wash.
• Shea Moisture: Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque or Superfruit Complex 10-In 1 Renewal System Hair Masque - I will replace the Joico Shampoo with this once a week or so to deep condition. I'm still in love with these masques but I do need to leave them in longer to see benefits.  I will apply them then get out of the shower with my conditioner laden hair in a cheap plastic shower cap and wait a good 20 minutes (or longer if possible) before rinsing it out.  I do make sure that moisture is my issue before doing this using a strand test. To strand test for moisture, I take a clean and wet piece of hair that has fallen out after I shampoo and pull it until it breaks. If I pull it and it snaps really quickly, I know it is time for a moisture deep treatment! 
• Aphogee: Keratin-2-minute-reconstructor- I still use this product but much differently.  I only use this when a strand test feels like I need a dose of protein.  To strand test for protein, I take a clean and wet piece of hair that has fallen out after I shampoo and pull it until it breaks. If I pull it and it stretches a lot (kind of like a rubber band) I know it is time for Apogee!  I leave it in for about 2-10 minutes depending on how stretchy the strand test is.
• Macadamia Professional: Deep Repair Masque- I will still replace my other conditioners with this all over my head if my hair is in a huge funk and I have no idea what to do.  Works every time.  I leave it in as long as possible. I'll try to get out of the shower and let it sit for 30 minutes if I can.  Otherwise, 5-10 minutes works ok as well.

After Shower Care and Styling:

This is also the same other than the products I am using.  I let my hair dry in a micro-fiber hair towel while I do my skin care routine.  Then I gently detangle using a wide tooth comb or my Tangle Teezer (no I didn't make up the terrible product name).  I have also used The Wet Brush, but I find the wet brush to actually just be a better replacement for a normal paddle brush to be used only on dry hair.  I'd stick with a wide tooth comb or Tangle Teezer when it is wet.  Then I will towel dry for a few more minutes before applying leave in treatment if I'm using heat then serum (which I always use).

• Shea Moisture: Black Caster Oil Strengthen, Grow, Restore, Leave In Conditioner with Shea Butter, Peppermint, & Keratin-  This is my step right after towel drying my hair every single time with my platinum hair. Also, who thought of that ridiculously long name?! I probably use at least a tablespoon of this stuff from my mid lengths to ends and put any remaining in the top part of my hair and massage my scalp.  My hair and scalp drink this up now. 
  

• Paul Mitchell: Super Skinny Serum- As my hair gets more damaged from the lightening process,  I use this but when I know I'll be using my Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo with sulfates to wash it out soon because this is a heavy silicone and I don't want to damage my hair long term.  (see my post on silicones in hair products). If my hair seems to need even extra TLC, I will still mix 3 drops of pure Argan Oil into 1.5 pumps of my Super Skinny Serum and rub the mix beween my palms before applying it below my ears and focusing on the ends.  Any remaining residue (maybe a few drops total of the mixture) I scruch/smooth into the upper part of my hair.  
• Wella Professionals: Oil Reflections Smoothing Oil-  This is a new product to me.  I am LOVING it though.  It smells AMAZING to start with.  Then it works in place of my super skinny serum when I don't want those hard to dissolve silicones and means I can air dry my hair and still have it be very nice and smooth.

• Silk Elements: Mega Sile Olive Heat Protection Spray-  I have changed heat protectants!  I got this as a sample and with my new platinum hair, this makes any heat styling into silky perfection.  It makes your hair seem very oily when you first apply it, but after you heat style it leaves your hair PERFECTION!  Just be sure as you are blow drying that you keep the drier far enough away that the product doesn't smoke.  If your hair is already dry, apply this product and let it sit on the hair a few minutes before curling or straightening to make sure it doesn't smoke as well.  I'm not sure if the smoking is bad for your hair but it seems like not a good thing right?  If you have more information on this product smoking, please comment below!
• Sebastian: Shaper Plus Hairspray-  I rarely use heat to curl, but when I do, find this to be best to hold my curls and not make them crunchy.  No white residue either.  You can brush through the curls and there will be no icky flakes.  My curls can last days though! Hooray!

Vegan Vanilla Mug Muffin

Greetings Sparklers,

Sorry I have not updated in a while.  But I recently got a sponsored offer to review Country Crock Buttery Spread*.  I'm usually a natural product kind of gal, but when life throws you free buttery spread, you might as well check it out right?   Compared to margarine *health-nut crowd boos loudly* this buttery spread has a smaller ingredient list and boasts being:

• Gluten Free
• 0g Trans Fat
• No Partially Hydrogenated Oils
• No Cholesterol 

I personally verified all the ingredients and I am also pleased to tell you that this product is vegan and  therefore also great for those who are lactose intolerant!  I was pretty impressed with the texture and rich buttery taste.  If you can't eat regular butter for some reason, this is a pretty great alternative!  With only 45 calories per tablespoon in the extra calcium/vitamin D version (like the one I got) it is pretty diet friendly as well.  It also comes in Original, Churn-style, or Light.  Also, at less than $4 ($3 on sale!) for 45oz, this is a very economic buttery option for those trying to save their pennies.

I couldn't leave you with a review of buttery spread without a recipe so here is one of my favorite quick and microwave friendly desserts!

Vegan Vanilla Mug Muffin:

Ingredients:

• 4 Tablespoons flour
• ½ teaspoon baking powder
• 3 Tablespoons sugar
• ½ Tablespoon Country Crock Buttery Spread
• 4 Tablespoons vanilla almond or soy milk
• ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
• Pinch of salt
• Add ins (optional): Chocolate chips, berries, nuts, etc.

Instructions:

1. Mix all ingredients in a bowl.
2. Pour into greased mug (at least 16 oz mug to prevent overflow).
3. Sprinkle a few optional add-ins on top of the the mix.
4. Microwave on high for 1 minute 30 seconds (or 90 seconds) depending on the power of your microwave.

The Best Moisturizer/Sunscreen Combination Products

Hi Sunshine Sparklers!

It is bright and sunny in Northern California during our September Summer.  I am also realizing lately that I'm going on 30 years old and I'm going to have to step up my sun protection game in order to fight signs of aging.  So today I want to talk about my top 2 daily moisturizers that also have SPF (Sun Protection Factor--how many of you knew that SPF mean't this?)

Depending on how much sun I'm going to see that day, I choose one of these 2 moisturizer/sunscreen products when I do my skin care routine in the morning.

I will say that Supergoop* is better for when my skin is feeling extra dry.  Otherwise, I like to add a quick layer of powder to reduce the dewy look a bit.  If you like glowing dewy skin, this is the sunscreen for you.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil Review

Beauty Product Review Time!

I hope all my sparklers are doing well and enjoying the return of my regularly scheduled blogging again!  Today, I wanted to review something I have been totally obsessed with lately:  NARS's Velvet Matte Lip Pencils*.  They are totally a splurge product but it really delivers.

The NARS website claims that: The application of a lipstick combined with the convenience of a pencil in a jumbo crayon design. Lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. The long lasting, non-drying formula is enriched with emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, seamless color for hours. Use for lining, all-over lip color, or pairing with another lip product.

• Rich, vivid shades
• Enriched with Vitamin E
• Convenient, easy application

Retail Price: $26 USD

Ms. Sparkles think that these are sent from heaven.  I have the shade and "Cruella" (a sultry red) in the Matte format. I have included a swatch of "Rikugien" (a brownish nude) which is a NARS Satin Lip Pencil.  The satin formula of Rikugien is more sheer in color and does not have the same staying power as the matte so I think the bold colors of the NARS velvet matte lip pencils shine and sparkle the most!  I did want to throw in a quick comparison for the curious Sparkler since I have both formulas.

Overall, I love the pencil format because it is great for precise application of bright colors.  These are such a great and hassle free way of wearing bright and bold lip colors.  Much easier than a regular bold color lipstick, however, if you want to know how to keep a bold regular lipstick looking fab, check on my Make-Up 101 post on How To Wear a Dark Lipstick.

These pencils glide on ridiculously smooth.  They also dry completely matte and feel like you are wearing nothing on your lips--even though they are bright with whatever color you choose!  Did I also mention the staying power?  I wear my bright red one through eating and drinking and only need minimal touch ups.  If you are no eating and drinking, expect your lips to stay looking perfect!

Healthy But Decadent Egg with Goat Cheese Recipe and Earth Balance Spread Review

This post about a very rich and romantic breakfast you can make for you loved one for Valentines day (I did promise that all of February is going to be Valentines inspired posts remember?)

Even better, Influenster has honored me with the opportunity to try another product for free! How cool for lil' ol' me!  If you follow me on instagram  or twitter, you probably have seen the pictures for this post already.  That's why you should follow me! Get the inside scoop and be a Super Sparkler!  I picked up my complementary product on a rainy day from Whole Foods aka "Whole Paycheck".  This obviously meant that I left the store with not only my Earth Balance Buttery Spread: Omega-3*, but with $75 of other groceries too...sigh.  I ran home immediately to get out of the rain this post out for you guys!  Lets jump into the review, then I'll give you my recipe.

Product Review:

Ms. Sparkles Says:  ZOMG!  I love this stuff! 100% Sparkles Endorsed Product!  Don't get me wrong, I still love my Brummel & Brown Spread made with Yogurt, but this has a richer/butterier flavor.  Brummel & Brown has less calories per tablespoon (45 calories) vs Earth Balance (100 calories for the Omega-3 version).  But if I want a richer more decadent taste without being actual butter or hydrogenated bad stuff (boo margarine sucks), this is going to be on my list for sure.  This retails for about $5 at Whole foods for 13oz.  Not too shabby!

Cooking with this product is just like using butter.  It got it pretty hot to char my asparagus (in the recipe below).  While there was a little smoking at the highest temperature, it wasn't too bad.  You a good too cook on high heat (if you are attentive) for things like pancakes on a griddle with it no problem.


Healthy But Decadent Egg with Goat Cheese and Vegetables Recipe:

Calories In Dish: 170 calories.

This is a quick and easy breakfast/snack that is surprisingly healthy and protein packed.  The Omega-3's in Earth Balance Spread are great for encouraging a healthy and beautiful body.  I'm not a doctor, and I did find this "on the internet" which we know by now to take with a grain of salt, but I found that "Omega-6 fats predominate the diet in the US, and this encourages the production of inflammation in your body. Many scientists believe that one reason there is a high incidence of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, premature aging, and some cancer forms today is this profound omega-3-omega-6 imbalance." Source.  If nothing else, the buttery spread and the goat cheese give the egg a very rich and luxurious taste--which is what really matters.  Seriously, this egg was soooo good.

Ingredients:

1 tbs Earth Balance Buttery Spread: Omega-3

1 oz Goat Cheese (I love the rich creamy flavor and that it is high in protein.  If you do not like goat cheese, you can substitute feta or you favorite low-fat cheese)

1 Egg (add 70 calories if you'd like 2 eggs)

2 Asparagus Spears (bottom woody bits removed)

1/4 cup of water

7 Grape Tomatoes

Instructions:

1) Beat egg(s) in small bowl.

2) Heat Earth Balance Buttery Spread: Omega-3 in a small non-stick pan on medium-high heat.

3) Scramble eggs in pan until barely set, then add goat cheese until goat cheese is warmed/slightly melty and the eggs are set. Remove from pan.

4) Add asparagus to the pan and then add 1/4 cup of water.  Cover and steam asparagus for about 1-2 minutes until asparagus is bright green.

5) Add chopped tomatoes on the side.  You can heat these too if you'd like, I just like the cold raw tomatoes with a bit of egg and goat cheese personally.

6) Eat it quick!  The egg is best when piping hot!

My Favorite Lip Balms For Kissable Lips

It is February my lovely Sparklers.

Hallmark seems to have declared all of February (and most of January) to be Valentines Day.   Therefore, I thought I'd do a bunch of appropriately themed posts.  In the spirit of this the love and heart shaped month, I will be doing a bunch of appropriately themed posts.  This week I'm going to share my favorite lip balms for soft and kissable lips.

I admit to being a lip balm junkie.  I buy (and lose) a lot of lip balm.  I like to apply it before bed.  I like to apply it under lipsticks, I'll even apply it to rough patches of skin on my elbows or knees in emergencies.  This means that I've tried a lot of different products because who wants to lose the same thing over and over again?  For the sake of this post, I have stuck to just plain/un-tinted balms.  Many of these brands also have tinted products, so if you would like to get one with color, you often can.

If my lips are feeling rough and like they need to be exfoliated, I start off by using a lip scrub.  You can buy lip scrubs, you can just use your toothbrush with toothpaste, or you can use my DIY lemon-sugar lip scrub which I will post and link here very soon.  Stay tuned for that!  Then I apply one of my favorite lip balms.

I picked my top 3 lip balms (which I purchase again if I lose them).  They are all color-less (so they are great mini gifts for men as well).  They are also in 3 price ranges to fit anyone's budget.

#1:  Sugar Lip Treatment by Fresh-$22.50USD for 0.15oz

Ms. Sparkles Says: If you are good at keeping track of your lip balms (and not losing them to the same gnomes/elves that steal just one of my socks) I think this lip balm is well worth the splurge.  The texture and effectiveness is simply fantastic. I dare even the driest of lips to not be helped by this stuff.  I like the citrus scent of it as well.  I have been loyal to this for years.  I love that the cap of the packaging screws into the base of the tube part.  It means that it is extra secure and will not get lost in your purse.  That doesn't stop me from losing the whole product, but at least I don't lose the cap.  The packaging is also made of a good quality, scratch and finger print resistant metal, so it never looks ratty.

#2: Smith's Rosebud Salve Tin by Rosebud Perfume Co.- $6.00USD for 0.8oz

The Company Says: A miracle in a can! Our world famous Rosebud Salve has been a family favorite since 1892. Celebrities love the consistency and emollient texture of this #1 selling lip balm and all purpose salve.

Ms. Sparkles Says:  This is an amazing deal! You get almost 1oz of product for only $6! I'm putting it as midrange because you still only get one tub of salve, meaning it is just as easy to lose as any other product. This is great because you can use it for lip balm, or rough patches of skin.  I have also used it on my nail cuticles with great results.  Men, never fear about the smell or color.  It goes on clear and does not have a feminine smell.  It smell faintly like roses, but in a gender-neutral/not overpowering way.  Lets just say I have secretly used it on my man and he approved of it and didn't notice anything about smell or color. This is my go-to lip balm to use right before bed.  I always wake up with soft lips when I use it.  My only problem is that the packing--while cute and made of good quality metal--can be hard to open if you have anything slippery (like lotion) on your hands.  That being said, you don't have to worry at all about the top coming off in your purse.  It is stuck on there I promise!

#3:  Beeswax Lipbalm with Vitamin E and Peppermint by Burt's Bees- $3.30USD for 0.15oz

The Company Says: The original. The best. And still your favorite. Our must-have balms have been playing in purses and pockets since 1991. Beeswax conditions skin, while antioxidant Vitamin E moisturizes. A final hint of Peppermint Oil provides that one-of-a-kind refreshing tingle. The result? Smooth, supple lips everyone will be buzzing about.

Ms. Sparkles Says: Cheap, available everywhere and absolutely amazing.  If you buy this in a multi-pack or on sale you can get these lip balms for way less than $3.30USD, this is just the suggested retail price.  This is your classic chap-stick packaging so it's nothing to write home about.  That being said, it product inside is really effective.  It provides a minty tingle and great hydration to the lips.  If you tend to lose a lot of lip balms, I would highly suggest buying a bunch of these so you always are able to find one when you need it.  They are cheap enough that you can have one in every purse if you want to.  I also love that this product is 100% natural.

A Little Post-Holiday M.A.C Haul!

Post Holiday Season Bliss Sparklers.

As part of a gift to myself, I decided to update my M.A.C* cosmetics collection by purchasing some essentials that I ran out of and some cool new products as well.  M.A.C is one of my favorite higher end make-up splurges, so I like to have a good idea about what I'm getting before going to a store.  Reviews like this from other bloggers help me, so hopefully my purchases and reviews help you out as well! Lets get started.

Here are my personal pictures of the products. Getting makeup colors right is very difficult, so below, I included MAC's pictures from their website. Mineralize Skin Finish Natural in "Medium Golden"- $32 USD

This just gives the most flawless and gorgeous finish to your skin.  I like it on top of foundation for a full made-up look.  I also like just concealing my flaws with concealer and then dusting this over my whole face for a more natural look.  I previously loved my skinfinish in "Soft and Gentle" (reviewed here), but after I used up every last drop of that, I wanted something that had a bit less glow to it.  Thus, the natural-matte finish of Medium Golden was perfect for my NC25 colored skin.  I love the new packaging which feels a bit heavier, luxurious, and has a mirror.  That being said, it does take up more room than the previous packaging.

Red Red Red Collection, Casual Color in "Red Obsessed"- $22 USD

The Casual Color product line is pretty new to M.A.C and is really cool.  It is harder than a cream, but still wet.  It is highly pigmented and can be used on the lips or cheeks.  It has wonderful color pay off and can be used with a brush or your finger tips.  It can add soft subtle color but can be built up to be quite bold.  Used under a powder blush, it really extends the wear-time of your cheek color.  Red Obsessed is a soft rosy color which I absolutely adore with just about any look for my skin tone.  

M.A.C Lipstick in "Viva Glam III"- $16 USD

M.A.C makes my favorite lipsticks of all time.  Viva Glam III is no exception.  This is a great matte lipstick which can be applied lightly for a flush of color, or applied thickly for a bolder look.  The Viva Glam III was released in the 90's, which mean's it is right on trend in 2014-2015 as the fashion world is bringing back the 90's brown-ish lip trend.  I particularly like this one because the plum tones keep the 90's brown-lip more modern.  It is extremely comfortable to wear, does not dry out my lips, and is long lasting.  Oh, did I mention all money made from Viva Glam lipsticks go to charity?!  They also have cool pink accents to the packaging where the regular MAC lipsticks do not.  

M.A.C Brow Set in "Boy Girl"- $17 USD

If you didn't know that I've been in the process of going blonde (see blonding part 1, part 2, and part 3 of this process so far).  As part of that, I realized that my stark black brows were not right for the new look.  However, the idea of applying bleach right above my eyes was absolutely petrifying.  That is where M.A.C's brow set has become part of my every day routine.  I brush it own after I do my brows with powder for full make-up looks.  Even when I'm not wearing any makeup, I still brush this through my brows (when I'm going out in public) so that they go nicely with my hair.  "Boy Girl" is a nice fawn-brown color which complements a lot of shades of brown-blonde hair.  I love that I never worry about this smudging or coming off.  It perfectly sets and colors my black brows.  IT also does not leave them crunchy.  This is my second tube of this and it is really just a back up.   My first tube has lasted over 8 months and I still have about 1/3 of a tube left!  Mini-Tip:  I use a clean mascara wand/spooli--yes that is what they are called-- to brush through after the brow set to get rid of excess product or clumping.

High Heel Wearing Comfort Hacks

Happy Holiday Season My Wonderful Sparklers!

How is your holiday season so far?  Mine has been very busy!  This post is inspired by the fact that over this last weekend,  I had to use all of these products (my poor little feet).

During the holidays there are many parties and occasions to wear your favorite shoes.  Yet as much as you might love your sky-high heels, sometimes they just don't love you back.  This is why I have a few tricks up my sleeve for making the fancy-shoe-wearing-season as pain free as possible.  Overall, you will find that I talk a lot about the quality of adhesive, since it really matters when it comes to these types of sticky shoe inserts.  I'll try and save you time and money wasted on the cheaper (or too expensive) versions.

"Save My Feet Blister Elixir" by Peaches and Boo Boo*- $20USD/4 oz

I did an extensive review of this product here.  I do want to somewhat revise my review about this product.  Most importantly to note that it really works well but with shoes that are already broken it.  There are some cases where this will help, but not completely prevent blistering (think brand-new ballet flats--which seem to be worse than heels sometimes for blistering).

Aldo's "Enrorich" Padding- Aprox. $8.99USD/1 pair.

These are by far my favorite gel pads for inside high-heeled shoes.  The extra padding right on the ball of your foot and at the heel really help extend how long I can wear my shoes.  They are also especially thin and fit in just about any heel without adding too much bulk (which is a huge problem with other competing products).  They also are low profile and can be worn without being seen on the strappiest of shoes.  These also really stay put in the shoe despite lots of friction.  They are also not too sticky.  This means that you can easily remove them to re-position them.  I don't know how many times these have saved a pair of shoes from being impossible to walk in to tolerable.  I even have them in heeled boots that went from "only walk from the car to the bar and back" shoes to "walk around the mall for an hour or longer shoes".  

Dr. Scholl's "DreamWalk Sole Expressions-Heel Liners"- Aprox $6.99USD/3 pairs.

This is by far my favorite heel insert brand and type.  Many of the thick gel ones are too tick and do not adhere properly to certain types of materials.  These are the perfect thickness and also seem to flawlessly stick to any shoe material I have tried.  Mini-Tip: Let the liner sit on your shoe for at least 15 minutes before using it.  This will really allow it to form a bond before you start adding friction to the equation.  

Band-Aid "Advanced Healing Blister" Bandages- Aprox $7.99/6 cushions

A little pricey for 6 bandages? Yes.  But when the back of your heel is oozing, bleeding, red, and raw from crazy blisters (yeah, ewwww right?!)  you will find these 100% worth it.  Why are these any better than a good ol' extra large bargain brand adhesive bandage you ask?  Well to start off with, it is really really good at sticking.  Aside from that, it is a weird stretchy material that you pull to exactly fit your blister.  The unique stretch also means that it will stay in place, even with your most ouchy shoes and high friction situations.  It moves and molds to your foot, meaning it doesn't simply get rubbed off.  Lastly (and most importantly), it really soothes and stops the pain of the blister.  Seriously guys, give the bandage about 30 minutes and you will forget that your heels looked like war zone victim and you were about to hack off your own foot to end the suffering just a few minutes ago.  As far as faster healing times, I assume this is mostly because you are not re-injuring your foot.  I was very skeptical of the claim that this bandage was better for blisters at most.  But Band-Aid has proven me wrong.  I have 2 of these in my purse at all times for blister emergencies.

SheaMoisture: Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Leave-In Conditioner Review (Asian Hair Perspective)

Howdy Shine and Sparkle Report Readers,

Sorry for the late post Sparklers! I obviously love SheaMoisture's brand even though I don't have "ethnic" hair (but I have an ethnicity so that term deeply bothers me...getting off my soapbox now) but dear lord they have the longest product titles!  I mean seriously, I reviewed SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque and most recently I gave my opinion on the Superfruit Complex 10-In 1 Renewal System Hair Masque.  If those aren't long enough, then how about the "Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen, Grow & Restore Leave-In Conditioner"?!  Long enough for you!  That's right, I think it is the longest product title in Shine and Sparkle report history. *applause for irrelevant benchmarks*.

Ok, I admit I was a bit scared to try this. There are a lot of potentially heavy oils that might weigh down my hair.  But it was buy 1 SheaMoisture product get one 1/2 off at Ulta, so I went for it with blind faith on one of my favorite brands.  And retailing at $10.99USD for 16oz this is a steal.  16oz is so much leave-in conditioner for me.  Maybe if you have even drier, thicker, more damaged hair than I do you will go through more of it.  But this amount is enough for over a year for me.

SheaMoisture Claims: 
A reparative leave-in conditioner that softens and detangles hair. Nourishes, moisturizes and supports elasticity so hair resists breakage when detangling. Conditioners provide a protective layer that improves the appearance of split ends. Peppermint oil stimulates the scalp for an invigorating experience.

Pretty much free of the big bad stuff.  It has no: No sulfates. No parabens. No phthalates. No paraffin. No gluten. No propylene glycol. No mineral oil. No synthetic fragrance. No PABA. No synthetic color. No DEA. No animal testing.

This Conditioner Features:

• Organic Shea Butter - Deeply moisturizes while conditioning hair and scalp.
• Jamaican Black Castor Oil - Loaded with repartive (Note: SheaMoisture made up this word, not me) omegas that promote healthy hair growth.
• Peppermint -Stimulates the scalp for an invigorating experience

How SheaMoisture Says To Use It:
Apply to clean, towel-dried hair. Work a generous amount of product into hair from root to ends. Com through for even distribution. Do not rinse. Apply more to longer hair at the end of problem areas. Can also be used as a rinse-out conditioner.

How Ms. Sparkles Uses It:
In the third person.  Gawd I'm funny right? Anyway, I haven't used it as a rinse-out conditioner because I'm totally stuck on the Superfruit Complex etc... deep masque.  But if you follow me on twitter, I promise to give you a yay or nay on it's use as a rinse out conditioner.  As far as my usage, I find that "generous amount" should really mean "not very much".  I tap 4 fingers on the surface of pot.  I rub what sticks to my fingers between my two hands and apply it to damp hair.  I concentrate on my ends and then whatever is left I apply to my roots.  I do this before combing out my hair with a wide-toothed comb to take advantage of the detangling effects.  I find that this does not leave my hair greasy, but really nice and moisturized.  If I repeat this process to add a bit more product, it gives me some nice texture and helps to define the layers in my hair cut.  Since I don't wash my hair every day, I find that the ends can feel a bit dry on day 2 and 3.  A 2 finger tap into the pot gives me plenty of product to rehydrate my dry ends between washes (also without being greasy).  Because this is so healthy for your hair, I don't notice any build up--just more good hair days.

• Deep Frying Hair Warning:  Do not use heat after using products with a lot of pure oils and no silicone!  In my silicone 101 post, I talk more in detail about how silicones help protect your hair from heat.  Without using silicones, you just have a lot of oil in your hair.  You apply a straightener/curing wand/hot blowdryer and you are essentially cooking/frying your hair in oil...eek!  You are being super nice to your hair with great oils, lay off the hotools.  If you must, make sure to apply a silicone based heat protectant before using heat.

Shea Moisture: Superfruit Complex 10-In 1 Renewal System Hair Masque Review (An Asian Hair Perspective)

Anyway, as you know, I totally love my SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque even though the brand is marketed at coarse, super curly hair.  Even though I have coarse, straight, bleached, and dry Asian hair, I love this product for all the healthy ingredients and smoothing/shining results.  No surprise, I jumped on this equally as long named mask "Superfruit Complex 10-In 1 Renewal System Hair Masque"*.

How SheaMoisture Says To Use It:

For deep penetrating treatment, cover hair with plastic cap and apply moderate heat for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. When using hair steamer do not cover, moist heat will add to masque's hydration.

How Ms. Sparkles Uses It:
I use this deep treatment 1-2 times a week.  Sectioning hair takes too much time and is unnecessary for my straight hair.  I gently squeeze (don't be rough with it or it will cause more damage and breakage see my healthy hair care post) out water that might dilute the conditioner then apply generous amounts of product to clean wet hair in the shower from your ears down if you are worried about greasy hair.  Since I have been slowing lightening my hair as seen in my hair lightening post #1 and hair lightening post #2 (part 3 coming soon!) I haven't had to worry about that.  I apply it to my whole head and massage it into my scalp.  Then I either leave it in my hair for as long as possible when I wash my body and shave, or I put it in a shower cap and leave it in my hair for as long as I want (at least 30 minutes), do some house chores, then go rinse it out.  My hair feels instantly protein and moisture balanced.  I love this when I'm not sure if my hair needs more protein or more moisture.  It simply solves everything.

Overall Thoughts: I found this on to be even more effective than the SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Mask for my hair.   It is a little less heavy on the hair (I'd say suitable for anyone unless you have very thin/fine hair) and produces great smoothing and shining results without it getting greasy quickly.  It is a little more expensive than normal drug store deep conditioners, but it is well worth the price.  It works better than some $30-$50 luxury conditioners and comes with a very generous 12oz of product.   I also ADORE the smell.  All SheaMoisture products I have tried have had an earthy smell that isn't unpleasant but not wonderful.  This smells like fruit and is simply luxurious.  Since this is such a natural product, I don't suggest on stocking up too much because it will probably go bad slightly faster than products with more preservatives.  I'm definitely going to need at least 1 back up though.

Best Bottom Lash Mascara--"Maybelline Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Mascara"

Hi Shine and Sparkle Report Readers,

Thank you so much for tuning in!  I have a really quick mini-review/product rave for you today. I know mascaras specifically are marketing themselves for your lower lashes these days.  I think the biggest difference in these mascaras is a much smaller mascara brush. I recently purchased the Maybelline Lash Discovery Mini-Brush Mascara (not waterproof) thinking that this might fit the bill and also be a great all around mascara.

I was really pleasantly surprised!  This mascara has the tiniest (but effective) brush I have ever seen.  It does a great job getting my puny lower lashes and making them really stand out.  It also doesn't smudge at all (which based on my face structure, is a reoccurring problem).  It is also small enough to use to coat my upper lashes on both sides after I use waterproof mascara on my top lashes to hold the curl.  This process gives me extra extra extra lash drama.  This is quite a feat since my lashes are naturally quite small.

Mascara Tip:
Did you know that waterproof mascaras are oil based.  This means they do not weigh down your lashes after they have been curled.  Using a non-waterproof mascara on your lashes will not hold a curl because they are water based.  Just like if you sprayed water on freshly styled hair on your head, it will not hold.  Use a water poof mascara to hold curl, you can apply your favorite non-waterproof mascara over it if you really want extra lash drama.

Overall, I highly recommend this mascara all on its own.   Add in the fact that it retails for around $8 when not on sale (you know Maybelline always has some kind of sale), and you have a completely winning product! If you have puny lashes like me, you will be very very pleased with this product.

Another Mascara Tip:
Love a mascara wand?  After you finish the product, wash it was soap and water.  You can dip it into any of your favorite mascara formulas and keep using your favorite wand.  This works especially great for the Maybelline Last Discovery Mini-Brush because the brush and wand are so small/skinny/long that they can fit into just about any mascara tube.  So once you have an extra mini-brush, I recommend trying the brush with other mascaras and see how you like it!

Make-Up Geek Shadow Haul + Reviews

Hi Shine and Sparkle Report Readers!

There are quite a few more of you than in the past and I wanted to give a warm welcome to all of you!  I'm very excited that over 1,550 of you have liked S+SR on facebook!  In honor of all my new potential readers, I decided to do a full report post for you!

I'm also excited to share with you my latest eye shadow haul!  I actually purchased 17 eye shadows from Make Up Geek (MUG)*.  This line was started by a YouTuber and they are absolutely outstanding quality for the money.  Each full-sized pan of shadow is only $5.99USD.  I actually go the 9-shadow starter kit ($49.99USD), the 6-shadow Vegas Lights Palette ($37.99USD), and 2 additional shadows for the regular price.

I was super impressed with the shipping and packaging of the items.  A lot of love and thought clearly went into it.  I LOVE that the person packing my stuff bothered to hand write my name on the thank you card!  How adorable!  I love supporting small local-ish businesses.  That being said, they do ship internationally, so everyone can get some. Hurzah.

All of MUG shadows are cruelty-free and do not test our products on animals.  They are also Talc and Paraben-Free.  I also love how their website has tons of video tutorials done by the founder/creator of MUG, great swatches and lots of other resources.

I instagramed, facebooked, and tweeted this picture, so maybe this isn't a new picture to you.  If you follow me on these social media outlets, you will be first to see things like this!  You know you want to see this early right?  

While the Vegas Lights Palette comes with a case (and is easy to remove the pans of shadow since they are only lightly magnetized), the other shadows only come as pans of shadow.  They sit perfectly in my customizable Z-Palette*.  I have the extra-large one that holds up to 35 standard-sized, round pans.  I also labeled the other eye-shadows in my Z-Palette in the picture below because I know I would want to know that as well.   The shadows I didn't label, it's because I have no earthly clue what they are called/where I got them.  I know I pulled them out of bulky containers.  And don't worry, I'll be using the beautiful Vegas Lights container to customize my own travel palette for when I only want to bring 6 shadows.

As you can see,  I love Urban Decay shadows.  I use their Naked 1 Palette ($49.99-not shown) as well as the shadows from a Summer Palette and a few individual shadows (as seen in picture above) all the time.  I think they have bold and innovative colors with great pigmentation and blend-ability. That being said for a lot less shadow in the palettes, and full sized pans of shadow running you around $18-20USD a pan, Make Up Geek is obviously the more affordable option.

In addition, I truly think that the MUG shadows are just as high quality (if not higher in some cases) as Urban Decay.  All the MUG shadows are very unique, buttery soft, and gorgeous.  I really think it is going to take a lot to get me to buy other brands of eyeshadow now.  Not that I'm going to need it, I kind of went crazy with this haul (which totaled no more than the cost of 2 smaller quantity of shadow Urban Decay Palettes I might add).  I'm so great at justifying my purchases. 

Colors Included In The Starter Kit -The mattes and shimmers in this are all fantastic.  This really is a great starter kit.  I'm not sure if there is a look you can't do with this.  From bold smokey eyes to soft romantic purple/pink looks, I'm sure this set can get it done.  And the black "Currupt" color puts all black shadows I have to shame (This includes blacks from Urban Decay, Lorac, Too Faced, and numerous drug store shadows).

- Cocoa Bear –  Matte golden brown

- Mocha – Matte Warm medium brown

- Glamorous – Bronzy, shimmery gold

- Creme Brulee – Medium sand color with a soft matte finish

- Shimma Shimma – Shimmery highlight

- Drama Queen – Densely dark purple with a shimmery finish

- Prom Night – Pale purple with hints of grey and a shimmery finish.

- Unexpected – Light and subtle pink matte purple blend

- Corrupt – Intense matte black with small bit of sparkle

Colors Included in the Vegas Lights Palette -These super unique warm-tones are possibly my favorite out of all the shadows I got.  They add a bit of pizzazz to my starter kit.  I'm so in love with how rich and luxurious all 6 of these shadows are! Even the matte color is super creamy and soft. I suggest grabbing this ASAP since it is special edition other than "Bada Bing" and the colors might never be seen again.  

- Casino - Shimmery saturated metallic gold with orange undertones. 

- Sin City - Shimmery Golden Apricot/ Golden Medium Orange. 

- Roulette - A rosy, burnt shimmery sienna. 

- Mirage - Pale matte beige with yellow undertones and a silky finish. 

- Desert Sands - Matte, medium terra-cotta.

- Bada Bing - Deep brown with flecks of gold

Other Colors I Purchased -I chose these colors because I didn't have a good matte white and the blue was just so pretty and unique.  Both are very buttery and blend-able,

- Peacock - Matte deep teal blue

- White Lies- Matte pure white
